In the aftermath of the Google Penguin update, a lot of things changed. Many webmasters had to change their entire operation to try and recover the huge amounts of traffic they lost. Many rested the blame solely on link building and stopped their link building efforts altogether.

The reality is this: Link building is just as important as it has ever been. If you want to rank a website on Google, you need to build links — just differently. Those who say social networking is the way of the future are right; it’s helpful and does make a difference, but it is not a replacement for link building.

While every search engine optimization company had their own strategies before the Panda and Penguin updates, there was a fairly safe and proven way to build links that would result in significantly higher rankings than a vanilla website with no SEO work at all. First, you would research competition to get an idea of the link building you would need to do. Then, you would find a mixture of websites with various page ranks and get anchor links to your website on those sites via manual link building or a link building service.

General knowledge at the time was that the majority, up to 60% in some cases, of your anchor text should consist of the keyword that you were trying to rank for. For good measure, most companies sprinkled in the keyword plus words like read about or click here on a very small percentage of those links. Another tactic to make the link building look as natural as possible were to also include some that simply said “click here to visit” or something similar. It was also good practice to include a few completely regular links, without anchor text.

This mixture worked to rank most sites completely via link building. The more competition, the more quality links you needed to build, and you also needed to pay attention to the page rank of the sites that you were getting links from. When the Panda and Penguin updates hit though, many sites that used this formula were hit hard, their ranking and traffic went down overnight.

For many SEO companies, it was a nightmare. Almost all of their clients lost traffic, and people who depended on affiliate sites for their income were devastated by the loss. There was almost no warning, and that’s why it scared not only webmasters in general, but also people in the SEO community.

Shortly thereafter, the webmaster community demonized link building as the culprit. We decided to continue at our normal rate of building links, and see what happened. Over time, our traffic and rankings returned to where they were before the Penguin and Panda updates. Personally, we attribute this to the fact that Google saw that the link building did not suddenly stop, as they would if someone felt they had been caught playing the system. In fact, our links continued to look natural, and Google gave us credit for them.

Additionally, we have now refined our system so that our links look even more natural and get more credit in Google’s eyes. The formula that we discussed earlier has changed; not the link building part, but the way that we assign anchor text to links. In order to continue looking natural, we phased in our new system over time, which has been a great success.

Our new strategy is loosely based on the following formula. We greatly reduced the amount of links containing only the keyword that we are trying to rank for. It’s now at about 20%. We began to include about 25% related LSI keywords, which are related keywords that would show up as you’re typing into the search field. Anchor text containing only the URL or other branded keywords make up another 35% of the links. The last bit we included were generic keywords for the website, which are about 20% of the total links.

Ultimately, this creates a more diverse linking structure for Google to crawl. It looks much more natural and is highly effective for ranking websites. Link building is just as effective as ever, and is still a necessity for ranking websites, especially those that are high competition.
