What are Meta Tags and How Can They Help In Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Meta Tags play an important part in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and can be inserted in the header on a web page. Meta tags are HTML codes located in the coding of a web page. What do we mean by coding of a web page? Coding such as HTML, Java Script, and CSS are used in combination to create the look and feel of a web page. One of the primary steps of SEO is to create and optimize the Meta Tags on a web page so search engine spiders can read them and determine what the web page is about. Google and other search engines use this information to determine which web pages are relevant enough to be displayed on the search results page based on which keywords a user searches for.
Meta Tags consist of three (3) main parts: Meta Title, Meta Keywords, and Meta Description. There are a number of other Meta Tags one can optimize, but these three are the most critical. Each part needs to be optimized using the keywords and key phrases most important to that specific web page. Say you have a web page that sells different types of golf balls. You will want to use keywords and key phrases that people are searching for when looking to buy golf balls. Here are some keyword examples a web page that sells golf balls might use: “golf balls for sale”, “Nike golf balls on sale”, “used recycled golf balls”, etc…
The trick behind choosing which keywords and key phrases to use in your Meta Tags is to choose the ones that are searched for most often by users, but also keywords that are not overly competitive. In other words, you want keywords that many other web pages are not using. If you can find and use keywords that a lot of users are searching for that many other web pages are not using in their Meta Tags, then your web page(s) will have a much better chance to show up in Google’s search results and on other major search engines such as Yahoo and Bing. How do you determine which keywords are too competitive? Where do you make these changes? Where do you begin this process? These questions can vary based on which page is being optimized. So what are your options as you are getting started?
Here are some suggestions:
1. You can take months or years learning and figuring things out yourself (Time Consuming)
2. You can guess & hope the keywords you use are not too competitive (Risky)
3. You can hire someone in-house who is an expert in the field to manage your SEO efforts (Costly)
4. Or you can hire a third party to handle your SEO needs for you (Saves time and money)
One important thing everyone should know: SEO is not just a one-time improvement to your website, but an ongoing process of improving and monitoring all of your SEO efforts.
